He was full of life and exuberant. None of his family members ever had premonitions of his death as he was said to have made up plans to travel out of the country this morning before the owner of life decided to ask of it.
Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, former Nigeria defender, captain of the Super Eagles and coach has died of cardiac arrest at the age of 54.
According to a statement by his family spokesperson, Emmanuel Ado, he died in the early hours of today Wednesday June 8, 2016 at his home in Benin, Edo state.
“With thanksgiving to God, the Ogbuenyi Fredrick Keshi family of Illah in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, announces the death of Mr. Stephen Okechukwu Chinedu Keshi.ur son, brother, father, father-in-law, brother-in-law, has gone to be with his wife of 35 years (Nkem ), Mrs. Kate Keshi, who passed on on the 9th December 2015. Since her death, Keshi has been in mourning. He came back to Nigeria to be with her. He had planned to fly back today Wednesday, before he suffered a cardiac arrest. He has found rest.” Keshi is no more.
What a sad day for Nigeria! Such a shocking news. He is survived by four children and his mother. The former Super Eagles defender was one of only two players to have won the African Cup of Nations as both a player and a manager.
Keshi who is regarded as one of Nigeria's most iconic sports personalities, made 64 international appearances as a player, and was a part of the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team.
Nigeria, Africa and the entire sporting world will surely miss him. May his soul rest in perfect peace, amen.
